  • Sunrise on the Owyhee River. Our plan for the day was to finish driving the Owyhee Backcountry Road before heading into northern Nevada.
  • View from near camp.

  • Dougal Reservoir.
  • South Mountain in the distance.
  • Volcanic canyon along the Wild and Scenic North Fork Owyhee.
  • Crossing the north fork.
  • A large rattlesnake that had just finished crossing the road.
  • Mormon crickets on the road.
  • Heading up Martin Creek on the way to Pine Mountain.
  • Copper Mountain across the valley.
  • First view of Pine Mountain.
  • The road got progressively rougher as we got closer to Pine Mountain.
  • Another view of Copper Mountain.
  • Brushy route leading to Pine Mountain. Soon we transitioned to the ridge on the right, which was a little more open.
  • Final rocky scramble to the summit. Surprisingly we saw two elk near here.
  • Tennessee Mountain to the northwest.

  • Road leading to Tennessee Mountain. There were several very steep sections on the way over.
  • Having fun in the Jeep.
  • View back to Copper Mountain (left) and Pine Mountain (right).
  • Short hike from where the road crossed the south shoulder of Tennessee Mountain.
  • Heading for the summit, which surprisingly had some cactus on top.
  • View north from the summit.
  • Zoom to the upper Bruneau River, a very remote and seldom visited area.
  • Merritt Mountain to the northeast.
  • Zoom to Merritt.
  • View southwest.
  • McAfee Peak and Wild Horse Reservoir.
  • View east.
  • Matterhorn and other high peaks of the Jarbidge Mountains.
  • Back to the Jeep. Another very steep road continued down the west side of the mountain.

Merritt Mountain

  • Merritt Mountain. A road goes most of the way to the summit. At 7700ft the road makes a sharp bend to the west and becomes HC 4WD.
  • Merritt Mountain from the approach road.
  • Road shortly before reaching the HC 4WD section.
  • Large meadow below Merritt Mountain. Using the Seek app, I was able to identify the flowering plant as Arrowleaf Balsamroot, also commonly referred to as Oregon Sunflower. McAfee Peak to the south.
  • Another view of the meadow. There was still a small amount of snow remaining on Merritt Mountain.
  • Short hike to Merritt Mountain from the end of the road. The summit was completely covered in mormon crickets.
  • Jarbidge Mountains to the east.
  • McAfee Peak to the south.
  • Ruby Mountains and Hole in the Mountain Peak far to the southeast.
